Lionel Messi will virtually unveil a 21-metre statue of himself in Kolkata during his three-day India tour.
Lionel Messi will unveil a 21-metre statue of himself in Kolkata on Saturday as part of a three-day tour of India that has triggered major excitement among fans.
The iron statue, showing Messi lifting the World Cup, is part of the “GOAT Tour”, which will cover four cities and may include a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Messi, 38, will unveil the structure virtually for security reasons.
A “Hola Messi” fan zone has been created in Kolkata with a life-sized replica of the football star seated on a throne. It also features a recreation of his Miami home and mannequins of his family.
Fans say the tribute is long overdue.
“It’s a dream come true,” said football supporter Samir Nandy, 64. “The statue is a fitting tribute to his resilience.”

Lead sculptor Monti Paul said the monument took 40 days to complete and is the tallest he has built.
During his visit, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner will meet Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan and former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly. He will also play short friendly matches in Kolkata and Hyderabad.
Messi last visited India 14 years ago. “India is a passionate football nation,” he said ahead of the trip. “I look forward to meeting a new generation of fans.”
