ANFPU Secretary General Olisa Onuchukwu says football reforms should address players’ representation.
The All Nigeria Football Players Union, ANFPU, says no players’ union is currently recognised by both FIFA and the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF.
The union says the ongoing football reform process provides an opportunity to address the gap and establish a credible structure for representing Nigerian footballers.
ANFPU Secretary General, Olisa Onuchukwu, made the position known in a statement on the consultations involving the National Sports Commission, NSC, FIFA, CAF, the NFF and other stakeholders.
The union says players’ welfare, rights, career development and effective representation should remain central to the reform process.
ANFPU says it has participated in stakeholder engagements and supports the NSC’s efforts to bring together the different interests within Nigerian football.
It also welcomes the involvement of FIFA and CAF, saying their participation could help align the reforms with established football governance principles while reflecting the realities of Nigerian football.
The union called on current and former players, administrators and other stakeholders to resolve disagreements over players’ representation and work towards a unified structure.
ANFPU assures of it commitment to working with the NSC, FIFA, CAF, NFF and other stakeholders to strengthen players’ representation and improve the organisation of football in Nigeria.
