The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) have ruled out Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in two individuals suspected of having the infection in Yola, Adamawa State, following two rounds of laboratory testing.
NCDC said the individuals tested negative for the virus after samples collected from them were subjected to laboratory tests.
In a statement on Saturday, the NCDC Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, says the agency was working with the Adamawa State Government through its Ministry of Health and Human Services to investigate the suspected cases.
Idris said the alert was received by the Adamawa State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre in the early hours of October 30, after two individuals presented with symptoms suggestive of Ebola.
He said both individuals were isolated and appropriate public health measures initiated while investigations were conducted.
The NCDC director-general commended Adamawa State’s Commissioner for Health and his team for their prompt response, adding that the agency would continue to provide technical support to strengthen the state’s response.
He stressed that there was currently no laboratory-confirmed Ebola case in Adamawa, adding that the previously confirmed case in the Federal Capital Territory remained Nigeria’s only confirmed case.
Idris urged Nigerians to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information about the situation.
He advised anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, severe weakness, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea or unexplained bleeding, particularly after possible exposure to the virus, to seek immediate medical attention.
He also urged people to disclose relevant travel and contact histories to healthcare workers and avoid self-medication.
