APC leaders and aspirants engage in consultations ahead of the party primaries for the 2027 general elections.
Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has entered a fresh round of tension as primaries for the 2027 general elections begin across the country.
Party officials shifted the primaries from Friday to Saturday night after unrest spread across several states.
The exercise was initially scheduled to begin with House of Representatives aspirants.
Party members and stakeholders have protested against alleged candidate imposition and failed consensus arrangements in some states.
The disputes have pushed party leaders and allies of President Bola Tinubu into emergency consultations aimed at preventing a wider crisis within the APC.
Tinubu Urges Members to Remain Peaceful
President Bola Tinubu has appealed to party leaders, aspirants and supporters to conduct themselves peacefully during the primaries.
He warned that internal divisions could weaken the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on Thursday, Tinubu advises winners to avoid excessive celebrations. He also urged unsuccessful aspirants to accept the outcome of the exercise in good faith.
The President stressed that politicians should not treat politics as a “do-or-die affair.”
