Omoyele Sowore countersues DSS at Federal High Court Abuja after FG filed cybercrime charges over his Tinubu social media post.
A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted fresh bail to activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, weeks after revoking his earlier bail for failing to appear in court.
Justice Muhammad Umar admitted Sowore to bail in the sum of N200 million and ordered him to provide two sureties before the bail takes effect.
The court directed that one surety must be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s community, while the second must own landed property within the Federal Capital Territory. The judge also ordered Sowore to deposit his international passport with the court registrar pending the conclusion of the trial.
Justice Umar released the defendant into the custody of his legal team and adjourned the case until July 6 for the commencement of his defence.
The Department of State Services is prosecuting Sowore over alleged cybercrime linked to social media posts in which he allegedly described President Bola Tinubu as “a criminal.” Sowore has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The court revoked his earlier bail on June 16 after he failed to appear for trial. Sowore had informed the court that a prior engagement in Lagos prevented his attendance and requested an adjournment, but the prosecution opposed the application.
Following the revocation, the court remanded him at the Kuje Correctional Centre after dismissing his application seeking the trial judge’s recusal and challenging the bench warrant issued for his arrest.
Reacting to Tuesday’s ruling, Sowore criticised the bail conditions but insisted they would not stop his activism.
“There is no force on earth that can stop this revolution,” he said.
“What I want to tell Nigerians is that it is not about my freedom; it is about the liberation of the Nigerian people.”
