Kwara State environmental officials carry out enforcement against illegal refuse dumping and noise pollution in Ilorin.
The Kwara State Government has warned residents against dumping refuse on road medians and other unauthorized locations.
The government says the practice threatens public health and environmental safety.
Commissioner for Environment, Nafisat Buge, issued the warning while reviewing reports submitted by Environmental Health Officers and members of the ministry’s task force.
The ministry’s Press Secretary, Muritala Shakirat, disclosed this in a statement released on Friday.
Government Targets Flooding and Health Risks
Buge said the renewed enforcement exercise aims to improve public health and maintain a cleaner environment across the state.
She explained that indiscriminate waste disposal contributes to blocked drainage systems and flooding.
According to her, environmental officials have intensified monitoring activities within Ilorin metropolis.
The operation focuses on illegal refuse dumping and noise pollution.
Officials Arrest Offenders
The commissioner disclosed that enforcement teams sealed two facilities over excessive noise pollution.
Officials also arrested six persons for dumping refuse on road medians.
“Environmental Team sealed off no fewer than two facilities where excessive and unbearable noise level were reported within the metropolis and six offenders were arrested for dumping refuse on the road median,” she said.
Government Warns Violators
Buge described indiscriminate refuse disposal as a serious environmental challenge.
She warned that the practice could contaminate the environment and expose residents to disease outbreaks and other health hazards.
The commissioner stressed that violators of environmental regulations would face sanctions.
She added that the government would not tolerate activities capable of undermining public safety and environmental sustainability.
Residents Urged to Obey Environmental Laws
Buge urged residents to familiarize themselves with environmental regulations, especially approved noise levels during night hours.
She noted that the warning became more important during the festive period when social activities usually increase.
The commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining a safer and cleaner environment.
She also appealed to residents to cooperate with authorities in protecting public health and sanitation standards.
