Taxpayers in the Federal Capital Territory can now register, file tax returns, make payments and obtain Tax Clearance Certificates online following the launch of Taxporta, a new digital tax administration platform by the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service
The platform, unveiled during a stakeholders’ engagement with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in Abuja, is expected to simplify tax compliance, reduce paperwork and eliminate the need for most physical visits to tax offices.
Speaking at the launch, Executive Chairman of FCT-IRS, Michael Ango, said Taxporta is part of the Service’s digital transformation aimed at making tax administration faster, easier and more transparent.
“Taxporta allows taxpayers to register, file returns, calculate tax liabilities, make payments, generate receipts and obtain Tax Clearance Certificates through a single self-service platform,” Ango said.
He explained that the platform has been configured to automatically apply statutory tax reliefs and allowances under Nigeria’s 2025 tax laws once taxpayers provide their income details.
According to him, the digital system is expected to improve voluntary tax compliance, enhance revenue collection and support efficient service delivery across the FCT.
While noting that the new tax laws provide penalties for non-compliance, Ango said the Service would continue to encourage voluntary compliance by granting extensions to taxpayers with genuine reasons for delays before imposing sanctions.
He also stressed that internally generated revenue remains critical to financing infrastructure and public services in the Federal Capital Territory.
Also speaking, Tax Controller of the MDA Tax Office, Fatima Abubakar, reminded taxpayers that all taxable individuals, businesses and government institutions are required to obtain Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TINs).
She disclosed that the tax authority can now automatically generate TINs using the National Identification Number (NIN), making registration faster and more convenient.
Abubakar warned that failure to file tax returns attracts financial penalties under the Nigerian Tax Administration Act (NTAA) 2025.
She also cautioned Ministries, Departments and Agencies against awarding contracts without obtaining valid Tax Clearance Certificates from contractors, saying defaulting agencies could face fines of up to ₦5 million.
Stakeholders at the engagement described Taxporta as a significant step towards improving transparency, efficiency and trust in tax administration in the Federal Capital Territory.
