Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma discussing marriage on the Dear Ife podcast.
Nigerian comedian and actor Bovi Ugboma has proposed that couples should renew their marriages every five years, saying the approach could promote accountability, improve communication and strengthen long-term relationships.
Speaking on the Dear Ife podcast, Bovi said a structured renewal process would encourage couples to reflect on their marriages, address unresolved issues and deliberately decide whether to continue the relationship.
He stressed that the proposal is not intended to encourage divorce but to create opportunities for honest conversations and mutual recommitment.
According to him, periodic reviews could be particularly beneficial in African societies, where marriage often involves the participation of extended families.

“Every marriage should be renewed, for example, every five years. It gives both families and the couple an opportunity to discuss what has been happening and decide if they still want to continue together,” he said.
Bovi added that the expectation of a renewal could motivate couples to resolve conflicts early and become more intentional about their responsibilities in marriage.
His comments have generated mixed reactions on social media. While some users described the idea as a practical way to strengthen marriages, others insisted that marriage is a lifelong commitment that should not require periodic renewal.
