Grammy-winning Nigerian superstar Burna Boy has set a new benchmark on Spotify, becoming the African artist with the highest monthly listeners in the platform’s history after reaching a record 46.84 million listeners.
The achievement sees the “African Giant” surpass South African singer Tyla, whose previous record stood at 46.58 million monthly listeners, further cementing Burna Boy’s position as one of Africa’s biggest global music exports.
The record-breaking milestone has been driven largely by the worldwide success of “Dai Dai,” Burna Boy’s collaboration with Colombian superstar Shakira.
The song, selected as the official anthem of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, gained massive international traction following its performance during the tournament’s opening ceremony, propelling it up global streaming charts.
Beyond the World Cup anthem, Burna Boy’s extensive catalogue has continued to attract millions of listeners worldwide. His 2022 hit “Last Last,” which earned a Grammy nomination, remains his most-streamed solo song on Spotify and is approaching 600 million streams on the platform.
The latest streaming milestone comes ahead of Burna Boy’s next studio album and his highly anticipated “Unity Tour,” both expected later this year.
Among Africa’s biggest streaming stars, Burna Boy currently leads Tems, who has 40.64 million monthly Spotify listeners.
Fellow Nigerian artists Ayra Starr and Rema also continue to enjoy strong global streaming numbers, with Rema recording 29.43 million monthly listeners as Afrobeats maintains its growing influence across international music markets.
The achievement marks another major milestone for Nigerian music on the global stage, highlighting the expanding international reach of Afrobeats and the genre’s continued dominance on digital streaming platforms.
