Bukola Olopade interacts with South African sprinter Akani Simbine during Team Nigeria’s training in Gaborone
The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, has condemned xenophobic attacks and called for renewed unity across Africa, urging citizens to embrace peace, shared identity, and continental solidarity.
Olopade made the appeal during a visit to Team Nigeria’s training camp in Gaborone ahead of the World Athletics Relays.
Olopade’s message of unity
The visit featured a symbolic interaction with South African sprint star Akani Simbine, underscoring Olopade’s message of unity among African nations.
“South Africa and Nigeria, we are one. Stop the xenophobia. Stop attacking your brothers. We are all Africans and we are one family,” Olopade said, gesturing toward Simbine.

Sport as a Unifying Force
Olopade described sports as one of Africa’s most powerful tools for unity, capable of bridging divides across nationality, language, and politics.
He pointed to the atmosphere at the training camp, where athletes from Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, and Botswana are training together and supporting one another.
“Look at what is happening here at training—athletes encouraging one another across borders. That is the Africa we want. Our young people must see that we are stronger together,” he added.
Call to Reject Division
The NSC boss urged leaders and citizens, particularly in Nigeria and South Africa, to reject divisive narratives and preserve the strong historical ties between both countries.
He noted that the mutual support among athletes during competitions reflects a broader message of unity that should extend beyond sports.
“When Simbine runs, Nigerians cheer. When our athletes win, South Africans celebrate too. That is global harmony through sport. Let’s take that spirit from the track to our streets,” he said.
Focus on World Athletics Relays
Team Nigeria is currently intensifying preparations in Gaborone for the upcoming World Athletics Relays, where both Nigeria and South Africa are expected to compete.
