UEFA has fined Kylian Mbappe and two other Real Madrid players for “violating basic rules of decent conduct” following their Champions League last-16 second-leg win over Atletico Madrid on March 12.
Mbappe, the French forward, was handed a 30,000-euro ($33,000) fine, while German defender Antonio Rudiger was fined 40,000 euros, and midfielder Dani Ceballos received a 20,000-euro penalty.
Despite UEFA opening an investigation into the actions of four players, Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior was not penalized. Both Mbappe and Rudiger were also issued a suspended one-match ban for European competition, though it will not affect their participation in next Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg against Arsenal.
UEFA did not specify the nature of the violations but referred to the breach of article 11 of its disciplinary code, which mandates “decent conduct.” The infractions occurred after Real Madrid’s dramatic penalty shootout victory over Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium, which secured their place in the quarter-finals.
The Real Madrid players reportedly provoked Atletico fans with their celebrations following the thrilling qualification.
