The Senate confirms Muttagha Darma as minister as he outlines plans to address Nigeria’s housing deficit.
The Senate has intensified calls on the Federal Government and security agencies to secure the release of students, pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oyo State.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, who raised concern over the abduction of forty-six persons, including schoolchildren and teachers.
During deliberations, lawmakers urged security agencies to strengthen efforts to rescue the victims and improve protection for schools across the country.
However, the Senate rejected a proposal by Senator Adams Oshiomhole seeking an audit of military spending and a review of previous security resolutions passed by the National Assembly.
Oshiomhole argued that the Senate needed to assess how defence funds were being utilised amid persistent insecurity, kidnapping and banditry across the country.
He also called for greater accountability from the armed forces, stressing that Nigerians deserved to know the impact of resources allocated to security agencies.
The proposal, however, failed to gain support on the Senate floor after no lawmaker seconded it.
Some senators also urged President Bola Tinubu to demand accountability from service chiefs over rising insecurity despite increased defence spending.
The Senate further called on the Federal Government to strengthen the Safe Schools Initiative through improved surveillance, intelligence gathering and stronger security presence around vulnerable schools and communities.
