Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, has officially resigned, the ministry confirmed on Monday through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
The resignation aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s directive requiring all political appointees intending to contest elective positions in the 2027 elections to vacate their posts by March 31.
The directive is based on Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 and the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) schedule for party primaries ahead of the next general elections.

Tuggar’s departure fuels speculation about his possible bid for the Bauchi State governorship under the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform.
A seasoned diplomat and policymaker, Tuggar has been a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political and foreign service sectors.
Appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in August 2023, he previously served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany from 2017 to 2023, where he strengthened bilateral ties, promoted trade cooperation, and advanced Nigeria’s diplomatic interests in Europe.
Born on March 12, 1967, Tuggar’s career spans diplomacy, politics, energy, and strategic consulting. His political experience includes serving in the House of Representatives (2007–2011) for the Gamawa Constituency in Bauchi State and contesting the state’s governorship in two election cycles.
