The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, NIQS, has renamed its Abuja headquarters in honour of former president, Segun Ajanlekoko, with renewed calls for stricter regulation in the construction sector.
President of the institute, Dr. Aminu Bashir, said the move reflects a commitment to professional excellence, mentorship and institutional growth.
The headquarters which was named after Segun Ajanlekoko, a former president of the institute recognised his contributions to practice and professional development.

According to the president, “The council chamber and data resource centre were also renamed after Shehu Lawal and Emmanuel Ofure of the institute “.
In his appreciation speech, QS Olusegun Ajanlekoko, expressed gratitude for the honour, describing the edifice as a testament to what commitment and professionalism can achieve.
Speaking on the persistent cases of building collapse in Nigeria, Ajanlekoko linked it to poor enforcement of standards and the engagement of unqualified practitioners.
According to him, quantity surveyors are responsible for cost management, noting that structural failures are often the result of incompetent contractors and weak professional oversight.
QS Ajanlekoko, called for stricter enforcement of regulations and urged clients to engage certified professionals to improve safety as well as accountability in project delivery.

He also highlighted the role of quantity surveyors in infrastructure development, saying early involvement in project planning helps control costs, reduce waste and improve transparency.
As part of the program of event, the NIQS also commissioned a 100 KVA solar power system at its headquarters to address rising energy costs.
The institute said the aim was to strengthen capacity in infrastructure cost management to support development efforts under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Earlier, Chairman of the occasion, Ademola Adebise, called for stronger collaboration between the government and the NIQS, describing it as essential for improving project delivery and restoring confidence in the construction sector.
