Federal Government of Nigeria has approved ₦5bn to support victims of the recent fire at Singer Market in Kano.
The All Progressives Governors Forum (APGF) also pledged ₦3bn, bringing the total relief package to ₦8bn.
Vice President Kashim Shettima announced the support on Monday during a visit to the market.
The fire broke out on Saturday, 14 February 2026, in the Gidan Glass section along Ado Bayero Road. It burned into Sunday morning, destroying more than 1,000 shops. Seven traders are still feared missing.

Mr Shettima said the funds would help affected traders rebuild their businesses and restore economic activity. He described the incident as a national tragedy, not just a loss to Kano State.
President Bola Tinubu approved the ₦5bn intervention, while the governors’ forum, led by Hope Uzodimma, contributed ₦3bn.
Emergency teams from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Kano State Emergency Management Agency, and the Federal Fire Service later contained the fire. Officials suspect a possible solar battery explosion.
The Chairman of the Singer Market Traders Association, Junaid Zakari, welcomed the intervention. He said the funds would be used carefully to support affected traders and restart business activities.
The latest fire is the second major blaze at the market in less than two weeks, raising fresh concerns about safety standards and fire prevention in major commercial centres.
