Nigeria has begun formal preparations for the 2027 African Youth Games, inaugurating a 28-member Local Organising Committee (LOC) in Abuja.
The committee was set up by the National Sports Commission (NSC) and charged with delivering what officials described as a safe, well-organised and high-standard tournament.
NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko told members they had been given a major national assignment that requires careful planning, transparency and teamwork. He assured African sports bodies and partners that Nigeria would provide a secure and athlete-friendly environment.
The Games are expected to attract young athletes from across the continent, putting Abuja in the spotlight.

He said major sporting events can create jobs, attract investment and promote cultural exchange.

The newly appointed LOC Chairman, Lekan Abari, pledged professionalism and accountability. He said the committee would work to deliver a successful tournament that reflects positively on Nigeria.
With preparations now underway, attention turns to infrastructure, security and funding — key factors that will shape the success of Abuja 2027.
The African Youth Games serve as a platform for developing young talents and preparing them for global competitions.
