FCT Minister Nyesom Wike addresses journalists during a media chat in Abuja, saying the Peoples Democratic Party must rebuild its structures and resolve internal crises before it can win another presidential election
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says he rejected the possibility of serving as Director-General of the All Progressives Congress, APC, 2027 Presidential Campaign Council because he would not risk losing Rivers State and the FCT.
Wike spoke on Saturday after inspecting the Apo-Karshi and Kubwa-Bwari roads in Abuja, a day after the Presidency announced former Zamfara State Governor, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, as the campaign council’s Director-General.
The former Rivers State governor said his priority was to help deliver Rivers and the FCT for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election rather than take up a campaign position.
Wike recalled previous presidential campaign directors who, according to him, failed to deliver their home states while leading their candidates’ campaigns.
He cited the 2015, 2019 and 2023 elections, when he said campaign directors including Rotimi Amaechi, Bukola Saraki, Aminu Tambuwal and Simon Lalong lost their respective states.
“I don’t want to lose my state! I will be in my state. I have two states: FCT and Rivers,” Wike said, arguing that electoral performance mattered more than holding the title of campaign DG.
He also ruled out heading the APC campaign council because he is not a member of the party.
Wike, however, reaffirmed his support for Tinubu’s re-election, saying he would work through a cross-party “Rainbow Coalition” involving politicians who support the President while remaining members of their respective parties.
He said political relevance should ultimately be measured by electoral results, rather than campaign appointments, ahead of the 2027 elections.
