Spain booked their place in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with an impressive 2-0 victory over France on Tuesday, producing a composed and clinical performance to move within one win of lifting football’s biggest prize.
Luis de la Fuente’s side took control of the semifinal from the opening exchanges and were rewarded midway through the first half when Mikel Oyarzabal calmly converted from the penalty spot after France conceded a foul inside the area.
Spain continued to dictate the tempo with their trademark possession-based football, limiting the influence of Kylian Mbappé and the French attack while creating the better scoring opportunities.
France searched for an equaliser after the restart but struggled to break down Spain’s disciplined defensive structure.
Their hopes of a comeback were effectively ended in the second half when Pedro Porro finished off a flowing team move to double Spain’s advantage, sending the Spanish supporters into celebration.
The victory extends Spain’s impressive run throughout the tournament, having eliminated Portugal in the Round of 16, Belgium in the quarterfinals and now France in the semifinals.
Their blend of youthful flair and experienced leadership once again proved decisive as Rodri controlled proceedings in midfield, Dani Olmo provided creativity, while Lamine Yamal continued to trouble opposition defenders with his pace and direct running.

For France, the defeat brings an end to their quest for another World Cup title despite entering the semifinal as one of the tournament favourites.
Didier Deschamps’ side found it difficult to impose themselves against Spain’s relentless pressing and patient build-up play and will now turn their attention to the third-place playoff.
Spain will now await the winners of Wednesday’s second semifinal between England and Argentina, with a place in Sunday’s World Cup final at stake.
England have reached the last four after victories over DR Congo, Mexico and Norway, while Argentina advanced by defeating Cape Verde, Egypt and Switzerland.
The winner of the England-Argentina encounter will face Spain in the World Cup final, while the loser will take on France in the third-place playoff as the tournament reaches its climax.
