The Presidency says security agencies arrested eight suspected kidnappers and rescued the pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State without making any concessions to their captors.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed the details in a post on his verified X account on Friday, hours after announcing the victims’ release.
According to him, some of the kidnappers were neutralised during the rescue operation, while the eight suspects are in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Onanuga said the Federal Government did not negotiate with the kidnappers or release the terrorist kingpin whose freedom they had demanded.
He affirmed that the suspect remains on trial for terrorism-related offences.
The Presidency said security agencies would provide a comprehensive account of the rescue operation in due course.
The victims had spent weeks in captivity after gunmen attacked three schools in the Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, abducting 39 pupils and seven teachers.
During the attack, one teacher was killed while attempting to escape, and another was later killed in captivity, sparking nationwide outrage and calls for stronger protection of schools.
