Stephen Eustaquio scored a stoppage-time winner as Canada defeated South Africa 1-0 to reach the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time
Canada reached the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in their history after Stephen Eustaquio scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to secure a 1-0 victory over South Africa in Los Angeles.
The decisive goal came in the second minute of added time when Eustaquio fired a low shot from outside the penalty area beyond the South African goalkeeper, ending a tense encounter that appeared destined for extra time.
Canada dominated large periods of the match and created the better chances. Moise Bombito came close in the first half, while Jonathan David was denied on several occasions by South Africa’s defence.

The introduction of Alphonso Davies, returning from injury, added fresh energy to Canada’s attack as the hosts increased the pressure in the closing stages.
South Africa struggled to make an impact in the final third and managed only one shot on target before exiting the tournament.
The victory marks another milestone for Canada, who had never won a World Cup match before this year’s tournament. Following their emphatic group-stage victory over Qatar, the co-hosts have now advanced to the knockout stage for the first time.

Canada coach Jesse Marsch praised his players after the match, describing them as national heroes and highlighting the growing future of football in the country.
Canada will face either Morocco or the Netherlands in the Round of 16 on July 4 as they continue their remarkable World Cup campaign.
