The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has honoured 17 Police Mobile Force officers killed in a terrorist attack in Yobe State, as he warned that security personnel continue to face severe risks in frontline operations.
Disu led a memorial parade on Tuesday at Police Headquarters in Abuja, describing the attack as a stark reminder of the dangers confronting officers deployed to counter terrorism in the North-East.
The officers died on May 8, 2026, during an attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
Speaking at the ceremony, the IGP said the force lost the officers while they carried out their duty to defend the country. “We lost 17 officers at a go,” he said, describing the incident as a painful moment for the police institution.
Disu said the Police Mobile Force continues to support military-led counterterrorism operations across Nigeria, particularly in insurgency-hit regions.
He noted that officers remain on active deployment despite growing threats from terrorist groups and armed attackers.
He said security personnel continue to risk their lives daily in joint operations aimed at restoring stability in affected communities.
The IGP stressed that the slain officers died in service to the nation and urged Nigerians to recognise the sacrifices made by security operatives.
He assured families of the deceased officers of institutional support, adding that the police force had activated welfare assistance for those left behind. “The Nigeria Police Force stands with you in this painful moment,” he said.
Disu also called on Nigerians to strengthen intelligence sharing with security agencies, arguing that community support remains critical in preventing attacks.
He warned that attacks on security personnel directly weaken national security and endanger civilians.
The memorial parade also honoured other officers who died in the line of duty across the country, as the police reiterated ongoing commitments to frontline security operations despite rising threats
