Members of Team Nigeria depart for the 2026 African Open Para-Powerlifting Championships in Algeria.
Nigeria has departed for the 2026 African Open Para-Powerlifting Championships in Algeria, with the team aiming to reinforce its dominance in African para sports.
The continental competition will hold in Oran from May 18 to 25 and is expected to attract top para-powerlifters from across Africa.
Team Nigeria will compete with a 13-member squad made up of 10 female and three male athletes.
The athletes include Ajiboye Rukayat, Ani Chiamaka, Anigbogu Franka, Dauda Ibrahim, Roland Ezuruike, Ferdinard Rita, Ganiyu Anifat, Idris Riluwan Sabo, Onyinyechi Mark, Esther Nworgu, Ogundolie Tolulope, Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Oyema Esther.
The championship is expected to feature athletes from 23 countries, including Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Ghana and Angola.

Nigeria enters the tournament with strong expectations following years of success in para-powerlifting at continental and international competitions.
Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, urged the athletes to compete strongly for medals while maintaining Nigeria’s status as one of Africa’s leading para-sports nations.
The African Open Para-Powerlifting Championships will officially hold from May 21 to 24, with athletes competing across multiple weight categories for continental honours.
