D’Tigress captain Amy Okonkwo signs with Atlanta Dream ahead of the 2026 WNBA season.
President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation NBBF, Musa Kida, has praised D’Tigress captain Amy Okonkwo following her latest career milestone.
Okonkwo recently signed a developmental contract with the Atlanta Dream ahead of the 2026 WNBA season.
Kida described the move as another strong example of the growing global reputation of Nigerian basketball talent.
Kida Commends Okonkwo’s Dedication
The NBBF president commended Okonkwo’s dedication, resilience and impact on the international basketball stage.
The Nigerian forward joined the Atlanta-based franchise after an impressive spell with the Dallas Wings.
She featured in eight games during the 2025 WNBA season before returning for training camp in 2026.
Nigerian Star Made WNBA History
Okonkwo gained major attention in 2025 after making WNBA history. She became the first undrafted player since 2000 to average more than 10 points while shooting at least 60 percent in her first two WNBA appearances.
The achievement highlighted her quality and readiness for elite-level basketball.
D’Tigress Continue African Dominance
Beyond her club success, Okonkwo has remained a key figure for Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress.
She captained Nigeria to back-to-back FIBA Women’s AfroBasket titles in 2023 and 2025.
She also won the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award on both occasions.

Kida praised D’Tigress Spirit
Kida praised the fighting spirit consistently displayed by D’Tigress.
He said the team’s dominance in Africa and strong performance at the 2024 Summer Olympics have continued to raise Nigeria’s profile in global basketball.
