Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has advised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to reschedule their planned protest in Abuja over security concerns.
The unions had announced plans to hold a peaceful solidarity rally on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), in support of workers affected by ongoing labour disputes.
In a joint statement, NLC spokesperson Benson Upah and TUC Secretary General N. A. Toro directed all affiliates and state councils in the FCT to mobilise members for full participation in the rally, which they described as lawful and peaceful.
However, in a statement on Monday, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said intelligence reports indicated plans by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria and other non-state actors to infiltrate and hijack the protest.

While reaffirming citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful assembly, the police warned that such infiltration could threaten public peace, safety, and freedom of movement within the capital.
Adeh said the request to reschedule the protest was made in the interest of public safety and to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
The planned protest follows an indefinite strike by FCT administration workers, which began on January 19 over unpaid salaries, promotion arrears, and poor working conditions.
Although the National Industrial Court ordered the workers to resume duty, the NLC and TUC accused FCT authorities of intimidation and vowed to continue resisting what they described as unfair treatment.
