Rivers State House Speaker Martin Amaewhule announces defection to APC.
The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Martin Amaewhule, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Amaewhule, representing Obio-Akpor I constituency, told lawmakers on Friday that divisions within the PDP prompted his move.
He praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for initiatives benefiting Nigerians, particularly Rivers residents, and said his defection would allow him to collaborate with the president for the state’s development.
“APC is my new party. I will do all that is needed to secure my party card and support President Tinubu’s work for Rivers people,” Amaewhule said.

He defected alongside 15 other lawmakers, including Deputy Speaker Dumle Maol (Gokana), Major Jack (Akuku-Toru), and Linda Stewart (Okrika).
Since Nigeria returned to civil rule in 1999, the PDP has dominated oil-rich Rivers State. However, internal crises recently created tensions between lawmakers and Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The unrest included partial demolition of the State Assembly and impeachment attempts against Fubara.
President Tinubu intervened in March, declaring a state of emergency and suspending the governor, his deputy, and lawmakers. All were reinstated in September.
