Kano State Environment Commissioner, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad-Hashim, announces new chainsaw regulations to curb illegal tree felling.
The Kano State Government has announced a ban on the unlicensed use of chainsaws to combat illegal tree felling and protect the environment.
Environment Commissioner Dr. Dahiru Muhammad-Hashim said on Tuesday that all chainsaw operators must obtain a government permit before cutting, trimming, or felling trees.
“Each tree removed must be replaced with at least two saplings,” he added, noting that fees will support replanting and climate resilience programs.

Violators face fines of up to N500,000, confiscation of equipment, and possible jail time. Unauthorized tree cutting carries a fine of N250,000 per tree plus mandatory replanting.
Enforcement will involve security agencies, local councils, and community monitors. Authorities are calling on residents and community leaders to support the initiative as part of Kano’s wider anti-deforestation efforts.
