The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has filed a defamation suit at the Enugu High Court against Bashir Ahmad, the former Special Assistant on Digital Communication to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.
The case revolves around statements Ahmad allegedly made on his X account (formerly Twitter) on January 19, 2025, labeling Kanu a terrorist and accusing his supporters of being enemies of the country.
Represented by his lead lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu is seeking a declaration that Ahmad’s statements—also republished on platforms such as Talkofnaija.com and Phoenix-Browser.com—are defamatory. He argues that the statements falsely portray him as a convicted terrorist, thereby causing harm to his reputation, integrity, and standing within the community.
The suit demands that Ahmad retract the alleged defamatory statements across all platforms, including his X account and the websites where the comments were republished. Additionally, Kanu seeks an unreserved apology, prominently published in The Guardian, The Sun, and Daily Trust newspapers.
Kanu is also claiming ₦100 billion in general and exemplary damages for the harm caused and requesting a perpetual injunction restraining Ahmad from making further defamatory remarks against him.
Ahmad Criticizes
Meanwhile, Bashir Ahmad has also criticized Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for not condemning the killing of EFCC operative Halisu Sahabi during a raid in Awka, Anambra State.
In a post on his verified X account, Ahmad expressed disappointment over Obi’s silence, stating that he had expected the former governor to extend condolences to the EFCC and Sahabi’s family.
“Peter Obi, in whose state the incident occurred, should have strongly condemned the killing of the anti-graft operative,” Ahmad wrote. He further added: “I expected Peter Obi to surprise us by extending his condolences to the EFCC and the family of Aminu Sahabi, who was brutally murdered while carrying out his official duties by a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu.”
