The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate closure of schools across four local government areas following heightened security concerns in parts of Kwara South.
The directive, issued on Wednesday, was communicated through the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kwara State Wing. In an official circular, NUT Chairman, Yusuf Agboola, confirmed that schools in Isin, Irepodun, Ifelodun, and Ekiti LGAs have been shut down on the instruction of the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development.
“Comrade chairmen, this is to inform you and through you, all schools in the above local governments of the instruction to close down all schools with immediate effect until further notice,” the circular stated.
Agboola added that the government’s order was prompted by “the security challenges ravaging the area and the efforts of the government to control the situation,” urging school administrators to treat the directive with utmost urgency. He assured that updates would be provided as the situation unfolds.
The decision comes less than 24 hours after a deadly attack in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area, where bandits stormed a church on Tuesday night, killing three worshippers and abducting over 35 others.
Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, who visited the community for an on-the-spot assessment, disclosed plans to strengthen security architecture in the region. According to him, the state will request the establishment of a Forward Operating Base (FOB) of the Nigerian Army and a Mobile Police Squadron in Eruku.
“We will speak with the GOC to see that we have a Forward Operating Base in Eruku to enhance security here and also talk to the Inspector General of Police about establishing a mobile squadron here,” Abdulrazaq said.
Describing the attack as “unfortunate,” the governor noted that security agencies were fully engaged, adding that President Bola Tinubu had been personally briefed on the incident.
“The President had to cancel his trip to the G-20 because of this incident and that of Kebbi State. So the President is aware and we are on top of the situation,” he said.
