Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reiterated that all promotions within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) are based strictly on merit, competence, and transparency — not favouritism, tribalism, or influence.
Speaking at the decoration ceremony of newly promoted senior officers in Abuja on Tuesday, the IGP said the event symbolized the recognition of excellence, discipline, and integrity within the Force.
“Today, we celebrate not just advancement in rank, but the affirmation of excellence, character, and distinguished service within the Nigeria Police Force,” Egbetokun stated.
He urged the newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General, Assistant Inspectors-General, and Commissioners of Police to see their elevation as a renewed call to duty and higher responsibility.
“Authority is meaningful only when it uplifts the institution and strengthens public trust. Leadership must be guided by fairness, justice, and service to the people,” he said.
IGP Kayode Egbetokun reaffirms that police promotions are merit-based and transparent, urging senior officers to uphold integrity and strengthen public trust.
Egbetokun dismissed allegations of irregularities in recent promotion exercises, insisting that all processes under his watch were duly vetted and merit-driven.
“There is no promotion scandal in the Nigeria Police Force. Every exercise has been transparent, merit-based, and in line with established standards,” he emphasized.
The police chief highlighted that competence, discipline, and performance remain the key determinants of career advancement, noting that his leadership remains committed to building a professional, accountable, and community-focused Force.
He also charged senior officers to embrace technology, intelligence-led policing, and innovation in tackling emerging security threats.
“The landscape of crime is evolving. Nigerians expect a Force that is smarter, more responsive, and deeply connected to the communities it serves,” Egbetokun said.
The IGP commended President Bola Tinubu for his continued support of police reforms and welfare, and also appreciated the Police Service Commission for promoting transparency in promotions.
He concluded by urging officers to lead by example, maintain discipline, and appreciate their families — whom he described as “the silent strength behind every officer’s success.”
“Together, we are building a modern, accountable, and people-focused Police Force that earns trust at home and respect abroad,” he added.
