The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), has declared indefinite strike, set to begin at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, October 31, 2025.
The decision followed a five-hour extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held last Sunday, where members concluded that the Federal Government failed to meet the association’s demands despite the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum issued last month.
In a statement released on Saturday and signed by NARD President, Dr. Mohammad Suleiman, the association says its National Officers Committee had “executed its mandate with grace and confidence” but was left with no choice than to proceed with the industrial action.
“The NEC has unanimously directed us to declare a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action to commence on Friday, 31st October 2025, at 11:59 p.m.,” Suleiman stated.
He explained that the NEC outlined minimum demands, strike monitoring directives, and modalities to ensure total compliance across all centres nationwide.
Suleiman further directed all centre presidents and general secretaries to hold emergency congress meetings to brief members on the resolutions reached.
He also accused some individuals within and outside government of harbouring “exploitative plans” against resident doctors, vowing that the association would collectively resist such attempts.
The NARD President urged members to handover patients responsibly, engage traditional and religious leaders, and sensitise the public and media on the reasons behind their decision.
“Trust the process, believe in your leaders, and remain resolute. Victory is certain,” he assured members.
Suleiman added that a communiqué and press conference detailing NARD’s demands and resolutions would soon be made public.
He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to act strictly in line with the directives of the National Executive Council, emphasizing that the strike aims to press for lasting reforms in Nigeria’s health sector.
