Kwara State Government commissions two new PSA oxygen plants to provide reliable, locally produced medical oxygen and enhance healthcare delivery.
The Kwara State Government has inaugurated two Pressure Swing Absorption (PSA) oxygen plants on Monday at General Hospital, Lafiagi, and Thomas Adewumi Teaching Hospital, Omu-Aran.
The plants were generously donated by the Global Fund to enhance access to medical-grade oxygen and boost healthcare infrastructur across the state.
Speaking at the unveiling, Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina El-Imam, represented by Alhaji Toyin Raji, Assistant Director of Medical Laboratory Services, described the oxygen plants as a significant milestone in Kwara’s healthcare journey.
“Medical oxygen remains a critical life-saving resource used daily in neonatal care, surgeries, emergency treatments, and respiratory conditions. With these plants, our hospitals will now enjoy a reliable and affordable oxygen supply produced locally.
That means more hope and better health outcomes for our patients and families,” El-Imam said.

The new facilities will serve as regional hubs for oxygen production, ensuring steady and affordable supply to hospitals, particularly in Kwara North and Kwara South senatorial districts.
Dr. El-Imam also commended the Global Fund, Federal Ministry of Health, National Agency for Control of AIDS, technical teams, and health workers for their roles in ensuring the successful installation and testing of the plants.
Mr Kingsley Onoja, Zonal Coordinator, North Central Oxygen, Federal Ministry of Health, led the technical inspection, confirming that all components—including the Air Compressor, PSA Oxygen Generator, Booster Compressor, and Filling Ramp—were tested to verify oxygen purity and system efficiency.
“The plants should not only produce oxygen but generate revenue through sales, with proceeds reinvested in operations and maintenance.
Establishing an Oxygen Committee and a sustainable framework will guarantee continuous operation beyond the five-year warranty period,” Onoja advised.

Dr Saliu Bolakale, Chief Medical Director of Lafiaji General Hospital, praised the project, stating that it would significantly improve healthcare service delivery and save lives through reliable, home-grown oxygen production.
“This project marks a major advancement in our state’s healthcare infrastructure and demonstrates the government’s unwavering dedication to the well-being of the people,” Bolakale added.
