Police and army block roads and teargas crowds near NUJ secretariat in Abuja amid heightened security for #FreeNnamdiKanu protest.
Security operatives, including police and army personnel, have blocked access to the Unity Fountain venue in Abuja ahead of the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest.
Protesters had gathered in the nation’s capital on Monday to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in June 2021.

The protest was organised by activist and Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore, who announced a march to the Presidential Villa to call attention to Kanu’s continued detention.
Security officials have intensified deployments to prevent unauthorized gatherings and ensure public safety during the demonstration.

Security operatives were seen barricading key take-off points for the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja. Fully armed police and army personnel patrolled the area, denying access to motorists and pedestrians.
In addition, all roads leading to the Federal Secretariat and the Three Arms Zone were blocked to prevent gatherings.

At the Utako area, a combined team of army and police personnel dispersed a crowd using tear gas near the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). Authorities clarified that those targeted were not protesters but civilians gathered in the area, as part of efforts to maintain security and public order.
