NCoS declares correctional centres nationwide as red zones ahead of Monday’s #FreeNnamdiKanu protest, warning against unauthorized access.
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has declared all custodial centres across the country as red zones in anticipation of the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest scheduled for Monday.
NCoS spokesperson Abubakar Umar disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, explaining that the measure is meant to prevent unauthorized access to correctional facilities during the demonstration.
“The public is hereby informed that all correctional centres are declared as red zones. These facilities are restricted areas, and anyone without official business should stay away to avoid untoward incidents or security breaches,” Umar said.
He further urged citizens to cooperate with security agencies to ensure peace and safety during the protests.
The protest, announced by activist and Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore, is planned to draw attention to the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in June 2021.
Police authorities have also reminded protest organisers to respect court orders that restrict demonstrations near key government areas, warning that anyone who uses protests as a cover to commit violence, destroy property, or incite unrest — physically or on social media — will be dealt with decisively.
