ASUU President Prof. Chris Piwuna says new agreement could end frequent strikes.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed its members nationwide to commence a two-week warning strike starting today (Monday), after the expiration of its 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government.
The announcement was made by the union’s National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, during a press briefing at the University of Abuja on Sunday.

Piwuna said the decision followed what he described as the government’s failure to address key issues affecting public universities, despite repeated assurances.
“Compatriots of the press, it goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on the ground to stop the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on the 28th September 2025,”
he declared.
“Consequently, all branches of ASUU are hereby directed to withdraw their services with effect from midnight on Monday, the 13th October, 2025. The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive as agreed at the last NEC meeting,”Piwuna added.
The strike marks a renewed phase of tension between the academic union and the Federal Government — a familiar standoff that has repeatedly disrupted Nigeria’s university calendar.
