The 2025 Nobel Prize season officially begins in Stockholm, Sweden today with the announcement of the Physiology or Medicine laureate.
The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute is expected to reveal the winner not earlier than 11:30 a.m. (0930 GMT), setting the tone for a week of high-profile recognitions in science, literature, and peace.
As in previous years, the Medicine Prize may go to an individual researcher or be shared among two or three scientists whose collective work has advanced human understanding in a single field.
The 2024 award went to U.S. researchers Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their landmark discovery of micro-RNA and its function in gene regulation, a breakthrough that transformed genetic research and medical science worldwide.

This year’s announcement comes amid growing interest in medical innovations addressing global health challenges, including advances in neuroscience, genomics, and immunotherapy.
Traditionally, the Medicine Prize opens the Nobel week, which will continue with announcements for Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace, and Economics in the days ahead.
Each 2025 Nobel laureate will receive a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1.1 million), alongside a gold medal and diploma. The awards will be formally presented on December 10, commemorating the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death, the Swedish inventor and philanthropist who established the prizes in 1895 to honour achievements that “benefit humankind.”
