Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, says the sector is Nigeria’s next revenue driver.
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to making the marine and blue economy Nigeria’s top revenue earner, with Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, declaring it the country’s next major growth engine.
Speaking at the Institute of Maritime Studies (IMS), University of Lagos, on Friday, Oyetola described the maritime sector as a “goldmine” capable of overtaking crude oil in driving Nigeria’s economy.
“Nigeria’s future lies beyond oil. The marine and blue economy is a goldmine that can drive growth and prosperity, and we are determined to harness its full potential to become the primary driver of our economy,” he said.

Oyetola, an alumnus of UNILAG, also urged Nigerian youths to seize emerging opportunities in shipping, logistics, fisheries, shipbuilding, marine research, and offshore energy.
“There are abundant opportunities for our young people… The future of this sector, and indeed the future of Nigeria’s economy, rests on your shoulders,” he noted.
Oyetola praised UNILAG and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for their collaboration in building maritime capacity, citing NIMASA’s recent donation of a new building to the IMS.
According to him, the marine and blue economy roadmap is anchored on sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity, with youth capacity development at its core.
