Imo State wrote their name in history on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, as they defeated Kebbi State 2-1 to emerge champions of the maiden U-19 Nigeria Independence Cup at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The final, played on Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, showcased not just football brilliance but the resilience of young Nigerian talents.
Kebbi State drew first blood in the 27th minute through tournament top performer, Tasleem Bala, who netted his fourth goal of the competition. Having beaten Imo earlier in the group stage, Kebbi looked on course for another upset.
But Imo responded with grit. Udeh Excellent leveled in the 38th minute before Wisdom Omorodion sealed the comeback in the 71st minute, finishing off a neat exchange with Josiah Igwe to hand Imo the historic trophy.

The victory sparked wild celebrations as jubilant Imo players and fans stormed the pitch, while Kebbi’s young stars were consoled by their coaches.
Imo captain, Obudu Chukwemeka, dedicated the win to faith and perseverance:
“First of all, I thank God for the victory. I believed in my boys, and at last we have carried the trophy. Glory be to God. We started this competition lagging behind, but with determination, we are now champions.”
Coach Muhammad Abdullah credited discipline and preparation for the triumph:
“We trained hard and modernized our play. I told the boys to fight till the end, and so they did. That was what gave us this victory.”
While praising organizers, Abdullah called for better officiating and stricter age checks in future editions.

Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Ambassador Sadiq Nasib Dampullog, hailed the success of the maiden edition, despite challenges:
“Nobody sponsored this edition, but by next year government and private organizations will come on board. Beyond football, the aim is to keep youths engaged, steer them away from drugs, and instill patriotism.”
Representing the Grand Patron, the Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, his representative Alhaji Salim Abubakar Bayero Obangarin, emphasized football’s unifying power:
“Football unites people across religion, tribe, and race. My message to the youth is simple: embrace peace, unity, and love for your country.”
With Imo crowned as inaugural champions, the Nigeria U-19 Independence Cup has set a powerful foundation for grassroots football, youth empowerment, and national unity on the nation’s 65th birthday.
