University workers under SSANU and NASU have given the Federal Government two more weeks to resolve welfare issues or face nationwide strike action.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) has extended its strike ultimatum to the Federal Government by an additional two weeks.
The unions, which had earlier threatened a nationwide strike over outstanding welfare issues, said the decision was taken after a meeting with the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan, and other key stakeholders on Friday, September 19, 2025.

In a fresh circular to chapters nationwide on Tuesday, SSANU President, Muhammed Ibrahim, said members were dissatisfied with government’s slow response to their demands.
“Concrete resolutions of our requests have not been met, necessitating the continuation of discussions,” the letter stated.
The unions are demanding fair disbursement of earned allowances, payment of outstanding arrears, and resolution of other welfare concerns affecting their members.
Ibrahim noted that although the government set up a consultative committee to engage the unions, no meaningful progress had been made.
“This extension provides the government with an opportunity to initiate the requisite processes to address our demands. If the government fails to do the needful within this extended period, the JAC will summarily proceed with a series of legitimate industrial actions,” the statement warned.
The new ultimatum took effect on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, and will lapse in two weeks, leaving the possibility of another round of disruption in Nigeria’s public universities if talks collapse.
