NDLEA operatives in Kano hand over 450,000 intercepted Pregabalin capsules to NAFDAC for forensic analysis, strengthening Nigeria’s fight against drug abuse.
The Kano State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted and transferred 450,000 Pregabalin capsules to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for forensic and regulatory analysis
Pregabalin, originally designed for the treatment of epilepsy, neuropathic pain, and anxiety disorders, has in recent years become one of the most abused prescription drugs in Nigeria. Widely trafficked in black markets for its sedative and euphoric effects, its misuse has been linked to addiction, mental health crises, and rising social unrest, particularly among young people in northern Nigeria.
The consignment, packed in 60 cartons and concealed in a van, was intercepted along the Kano–Hadejia road by NDLEA operatives during a routine patrol.

Confirming the development in a statement on Thursday, NDLEA Kano Command Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Maigatari, said:
“The seized items were brought to the NDLEA office for investigation; no legitimate ownership or documentation was presented for the consignment.”
Acting under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between NDLEA and NAFDAC on November 24, 2024, the NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), directed the immediate transfer of the seized drugs to NAFDAC for comprehensive laboratory testing and regulatory determination.
The collaboration between NDLEA and NAFDAC is part of a broader strategy to combat the surge of drug abuse and pharmaceutical diversion in Nigeria. Authorities warn that curbing the illegal distribution of controlled medications like Pregabalin is critical to safeguarding public health and protecting communities from the dangers of substance misuse.
