President Tinubu declares end of Rivers State emergency, as Governor Fubara and Assembly resume office September 18, 2025.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially declared an end to the six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, effective midnight, September 17, 2025.
In a statement, the President says the decision followed improved political stability and renewed commitment by stakeholders in the state to work together for peace, order, and democratic governance.
Tinubu reminded Nigerians that the emergency was declared on March 18, 2025, after a total breakdown of governance between the executive and the legislature in Rivers State. He noted that vandalism of economic assets, political division within the House of Assembly, and failure to pass an appropriation bill brought government activities to a standstill.
“I am happy today that there is a groundswell of understanding, readiness, and enthusiasm among stakeholders in Rivers State for an immediate return to democratic governance. I therefore do not see why the state of emergency should exist a day longer,” Tinubu stated.
The President confirmed that Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, will resume duties from September 18, 2025.
Tinubu thanked the National Assembly, traditional rulers, and the people of Rivers State for their patience and support during the emergency, stressing that peace and cooperation remain vital for Nigeria’s democracy to thrive.
