Liverpool and Portugal international striker Diogo Jota has died in a car crash in Spain.
The 28-year-old Portugal forward was involved in a fatal accident early Thursday in Zamora.
Jota was travelling with his younger brother, André Silva, a professional footballer with Portuguese second-tier side Penafiel, when the fatal accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday in the Zamora province of Spain.
According to local reports, the crash happened at around 12:30am local time. Their Lamborghini reportedly suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle, veered off the road, and caught fire.
The BBC confirms that both brothers died at the scene.
Jota recently married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children. The wedding took place just last month.
He played a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League title victory last season, and was part of the Portugal squad that defeated Spain in the UEFA Nations League final in June.
Tributes have poured in from across the football world, with fans, teammates, and officials mourning the loss of a player described as talented, humble, and fiercely dedicated.
