The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), says it is investigating two suspected cases of Ebola in the north-east, as health authorities intensify surveillance to prevent the spread of the virus.
Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, disclosed this in a statement published on Saturday, saying both suspected cases had been placed in isolation.
He said laboratory tests were being conducted urgently to establish whether the individuals had contracted the virus.
According to Dr Idris, rapid response teams have also begun contact tracing, including monitoring the recent movements of the suspected cases within the country.
The NCDC urged Nigerians to avoid spreading unverified information and maintain good hygiene, including regular handwashing and the use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers.
It also advises anyone who develops unusual symptoms to seek immediate medical attention at designated health facilities.
Dr Idris said Nigeria had the health security structures and resources needed to manage the situation, adding that the agency would provide further information when the laboratory results were confirmed.
The announcement comes amid heightened surveillance following Ebola outbreaks in parts of Central Africa.
