Ayo Animashaun, founder of The Headies Awards, criticises artists over their participation in local and international award schemes.
The founder of The Headies Awards, Ayo Animashaun, has criticised Nigerian music artists for submitting their works to international award bodies while failing to enter them for consideration at local awards.
Animashaun expressed disappointment in an Instagram Story post, saying some artists submit entries for foreign awards but later complain when they are not nominated for The Headies.
He said some artists publicly celebrate their submissions to international award bodies despite showing little interest in the Nigerian awards platform.
“Tom, Dick and Harry will submit entries to foreign award bodies that don’t even care about them and proudly post about it. But these same people won’t submit their entries to the Headies, yet they’ll complain about not being nominated,” he wrote.
His comments come as Nigerian music stars, including Davido, Ayra Starr, Tems, Asake, Burna Boy, Rema and Victony, have reportedly submitted their works for consideration for the 2027 Grammy Awards, according to Daily Post.
Meanwhile, organisers of The Headies have postponed the 18th edition of the awards ceremony from October 23, 2026, to April 10 and 11, 2027, in Toronto, Canada.
The organisers said the postponement would allow them to expand activities in Nigeria and Canada, including workshops, seminars, industry engagements and a global trade and investment summit.
