US President Donald Trump has proposed a $5,000 payment to American adults if Republicans retain control of the House of Representatives and Senate in the November 3 midterm elections.
Trump announced the proposal while addressing a Republican convention, saying the payment would be funded by the country’s economic strength and must be spent within the United States.
Reuters estimates that paying $5,000 to about 270 million American adults could cost roughly $1.35 trillion.
Surrounded by supporters waving American flag placards, Trump claimed, without providing evidence, that his second term had been “the most successful two years, financially and every other way, in the history of the presidency.”
He warned voters that losing Republican control of Congress could affect border security, tax cuts, safety and economic gains.
“If we lose, you’re going to lose your border, you’re going to lose your tax cuts, you’re going to lose your safety and security, you’re going to lose your wealth,” Trump said.
Trump also made several references to the war in Iran, warning Tehran against escalating the conflict and threatening a stronger US response.
He acknowledged the economic pressure caused by rising oil prices while recounting his decision-making around the conflict.
Meanwhile, Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin accused Republicans of staging a “bizarre dog-and-pony show” to satisfy Trump.
Martin described Trump as a “lame duck failure” and said he was dragging the Republican Party towards defeat.
The Republican midterm convention features 12 hours of programming spread across two nights, with Trump allies, candidates and senior administration officials among the speakers.
The Republicans are defending their congressional majorities, with all House seats and about one-third of Senate seats up for election
