The Court of Appeal in Abuja, has upheld the conviction of former Managing Director of the Nigeria Export-Import Bank, Robert Orya, over a ₦2.4 billion fraud case.
A three-member panel of the appellate court, led by Justice Muhammed Danjuma, dismissed Mr Orya’s appeal and affirmed the judgment of the Federal Capital Territory High Court.
The FCT High Court convicted Orya on 49 counts involving obtaining money by false pretences, forgery and advance fee fraud.
Justice F.E. Messiri sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment on each count, with the sentences to run concurrently.
The conviction was handed down on February 5, 2026.
In its unanimous judgment on Tuesday, the Court of Appeal ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
The court resolved all the issues raised by Orya in favour of the prosecution and dismissed the appeal for lacking merit.
Justice Danjuma subsequently affirmed the judgment of the FCT High Court.
Orya, who served as NEXIM Bank managing director from 2009 to 2016, was appointed to the position by former President Umaru Yar’Adua in August 2009.
He was reappointed by former President Goodluck Jonathan in August 2014.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission arraigned him in 2021 over the 49-count charge.
