Nigeria’s swimmers celebrate a record 35-medal haul at the Africa Zone 2 Swimming Championships in Dakar.
Nigeria’s swimming team has won a record 35 medals at the Africa Zone 2 Swimming Championships in Dakar, Senegal.
The combined junior and senior teams claimed 17 gold, 14 silver and four bronze medals, giving Nigeria its biggest medal haul at the competition in more than a decade.
The Nigeria Aquatics Federation, NAqF, described the performance as a major milestone for the country’s swimming programme and evidence of progress in athlete development.
NAqF President, Lekan Fatodu, congratulated the swimmers, coaches and technical officials for their discipline and determination throughout the championship.
He said the performance of the junior swimmers was particularly encouraging as Nigeria prepares for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, which will take place in Dakar from October 30 to November 13.
Fatodu said the experience gained in Dakar would help Nigeria’s young swimmers prepare for the Games and other international competitions.
He also credited the National Sports Commission, led by Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, for supporting athlete development.
Fatodu said the federation would continue to strengthen its development programmes and preparations for major international competitions.
Nigeria’s team finished the championship with 35 medals from individual and relay events.
