President Bola Tinubu has formally retained Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election, ending months of speculation over the composition of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket.
The APC on Friday presented the nomination forms of Tinubu and Shettima to its National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, for onward submission to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the deadline for presidential nominations.
The move confirms that the party will contest the 2027 presidential election with the same ticket that secured victory in the 2023 polls.
The submission comes amid the close of INEC’s nomination window for presidential and National Assembly candidates, with political parties making last-minute submissions before the commission’s deadline.
The electoral body said it had also received the presidential and vice-presidential nominations of several other political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Action Alliance (AA), African Action Congress (AAC), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and the Young Progressives Party (YPP).
Presenting the nomination forms, APC National Organising Secretary, Sulaiman Argungu, said the documents represented the formal nomination of the party’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates following the APC primary.
Speaking on behalf of APC governors, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma reaffirmed the governors’ support for Tinubu and pledged to mobilise support for the party ahead of the election.
Receiving the documents, APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda said the President’s emergence reflected the confidence of APC members and expressed optimism about the party’s chances in the 2027 general election.
The confirmation of Shettima as running mate ends months of political speculation that Tinubu could replace him with a northern Christian in an effort to broaden the party’s electoral appeal
