Four people, including three children, have lost their lives in a tragic bus fire in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Saturday when a Hummer bus carrying 44 passengers from Zaki Local Government Area in Bauchi State to Gwaram went up in flames near Government Girls Unity Secondary School.
Police spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu, confirmed that the fire started when a mattress tied to the back of the bus made contact with the exhaust pipe, sparking a deadly blaze. Four victims, including a 40-year-old woman and three children aged five, three, and ten, were burnt beyond recognition.
Ten other passengers sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to Gwaram Cottage Hospital for treatment, while the remaining passengers were safely evacuated. The remains of the deceased have been handed over to their families for burial.
The Jigawa Police Command is urging motorists, especially commercial drivers, to avoid overloading, speeding, and to regularly inspect their vehicles to prevent such tragedies.
