Nigerian evacuees prepare to board an Air Peace flight from South Africa to Lagos
The Federal Government will evacuate another group of Nigerians from South Africa on Tuesday as concerns grow over planned anti-immigrant protests in the country.
Air Peace operated the evacuation flight, which departed Nigeria on Monday to bring home Nigerians who registered for voluntary return.
Officials said the aircraft is expected to arrive in Lagos on Tuesday morning with 271 evacuees on board.
The latest evacuation comes ahead of anti-immigrant protests scheduled to begin in South Africa on June 30, raising concerns about the safety of foreign nationals.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the government approved the voluntary evacuation programme to protect Nigerian citizens and support those willing to return home.
Earlier evacuation flights brought back 262 Nigerians on June 11 and another 66 on June 25.
With the latest batch, the number of Nigerians repatriated under the programme will exceed 500.
The Federal Government said it will continue to work with Air Peace and relevant agencies to ensure the safe return of all registered evacuees.
