The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to defending the nation’s sovereignty and intensifying operations against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats as it marked its 163rd anniversary.
The pledge was made by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, during the Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2026 Interdenominational Church Service held in Abuja to kick off activities marking the Army’s anniversary.
Represented by Maj. Gen. Maxwell Dangana, Oluyede described the occasion as a time to reflect on the Army’s achievements, honour fallen heroes and recommit to safeguarding Nigeria.
“Today provides us with an opportunity to thank God for His mercies, reflect on our journey, celebrate our accomplishments, honour our heroes and renew our commitment to the defence of our dear nation,” he said.
He also praised the dedication of officers and soldiers serving in various operational theatres across the country.
“The occasion is also to appreciate the sacrifices and dedication of our personnel who continue to serve with courage and professionalism in various operational theatres across the country.”

Speaking on the theme of this year’s celebration, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” the Army chief said it reinforces the military’s constitutional responsibility to protect lives and promote national stability.
“The theme is a clarion call for introspection, renewal and rededication. It reminds us that our primary constitutional mandate is deeply intertwined with the safety, prosperity and trust of the Nigerian citizens we have sworn to protect.”
Oluyede said troops remain actively engaged in counter-terrorism, anti-banditry, anti-kidnapping and anti-oil theft operations nationwide, adding that the Army has continued to record significant operational successes despite complex security challenges.
“Despite the complexity of these security challenges, the Nigerian Army has continued to record notable achievements across the various theatres of operation.”
“Through the dedication, courage and professionalism of our officers and soldiers, several criminal elements have been neutralised, terrorist enclaves dismantled, hostages rescued and normalcy restored to communities.”
He noted that the achievements were made possible through collaboration with other security agencies and stakeholders.
The Chief of Army Staff said his command philosophy remains focused on building “a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient force,” with emphasis on leadership, operational effectiveness and personnel welfare under the Army’s “Soldier First” initiative.
Oluyede also revealed that recruitment into the Nigerian Army has increased significantly following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to strengthen the country’s security architecture.
“This strategic expansion aims to strengthen the Army’s operational capacity and enhance our ability to respond more effectively to contemporary security threats.”
He assured Nigerians that the new recruits would be adequately trained, properly equipped and professionally developed to support national security efforts.
Paying tribute to fallen soldiers, Oluyede described their sacrifices as an enduring source of inspiration.
“We must never forget the gallant officers and soldiers who paid the supreme sacrifice in defence of our nation. Their courage, patriotism and selfless service remain a source of inspiration to us all.”
He also acknowledged the sacrifices of wounded personnel, veterans and military families.
“Your unwavering support, patience, understanding and sacrifices constitute a critical pillar of our operational success.”
The Army chief thanked President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government for their continued support, saying recent operational gains would not have been possible without sustained government backing.
“The successes recorded by the Nigerian Army in recent times would not have been possible without the continued support of the President and the Federal Government.”
Oluyede urged Nigerians to continue praying for peace, unity and divine protection for the country while reaffirming the Army’s commitment to loyalty, discipline, integrity, selfless service and professionalism.
Delivering the sermon, the Director of Chaplaincy (Roman Catholic), Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. Anthony Maimagani, described military service as a divine calling and urged personnel to uphold justice, courage, integrity and compassion while protecting innocent citizens and serving the nation.
